Nancy Sanchez is the proud daughter of Mexican immigrants, and is deeply connected to her roots and the long line of strong and hardworking people in her familia. She is a champion for womyn's autonomy, equality, political and economic power!
Nancy worked with California Latinas for Reproductive Justice (CLRJ) between 2005-2020. In her role as Associate Director, she was responsible for the oversight and management of the organizational infrastructure, including: Developing systems and tools for financial management and fundraising, financial planning and monitoring, budget development and management, financial and program evaluation, supporting and sometimes leading fundraising efforts - particularly through grants and special events; working collaboratively with CPAs to produce financial statements, financial reviews, audits, annual IRS 990 and state filings. She has worked closely with the Executive Directors, Board of Directors, and lead program staff to develop and implement Strategic and Fundraising Plans, an executive transition, annual staffing plans, staff benefits plans, new employee policies and procedures, and adopt technologies that have both laid the foundation and propelled the organization to thrive in its programmatic and fundraising efforts.
In 2018, Nancy founded Mitote Consulting to expand the scope of her impact beyond California. In her consulting work she has had the privilege of collaborating with other womyn of color to increase their capacity in nonprofit financial management and oversight, so that they can continue to focus on the issues that matter most, like eliminating violence against womyn and addressing environmental and reproductive health issues.
Previously Nancy worked with UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education, & Access (IDEA), and small business entrepreneurs. Nancy’s volunteer community work includes: Teaching comprehensive sexuality education with Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, and mentoring young girls with Latinas Guiding Latinas de UCLA. Nancy graduated from UCLA in 2005, majoring in History and Women’s Studies with an emphasis in race, class, and gender.
Nancy enjoys following UCLA sports, interior design T.V shows, going to the beach, museums, musicals, dancing, and singing with Mariachi. She loves a good cup of coffee and secretly wishes ice cream was its own food group.
Mitote has different meanings for different cultures, and the meanings have evolved over time. For Aztecs, mitote is a traditional warrior dance or gathering. For Mayans, mitote is the art and practice of lucid dreaming or taking control of one's dreams. For most Mexican families in modern times, the word mitote is synonymous with both "turmoil" or a fiesta organized in someone's home. For me, the word mitote embodies all of these concepts and reflects my own life and consulting work: To be a warrior, to dream, to dance and celebrate!
